S.E.T., Inc. is a growing heavy civil contractor specializing in highway, bridge, and infrastructure construction across Ohio and surrounding states. As a $100M+ contractor, we are focused on disciplined growth, operational excellence, and building strong internal systems to support long-term expansion.

We're hiring a Pipelayer to install and align underground pipe for water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage systems across our Ohio and Western Pennsylvania projects.

Position Overview

The Pipelayer is responsible for the installation, alignment, and connection of underground pipe used in water, sanitary sewer, and storm drainage systems. This role works closely with equipment operators, laborers, and the crew foreman to ensure pipe is laid to grade, properly bedded, and connected according to plans and specifications. This is physically demanding, outdoor field work performed on active construction sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • —Lay and align sections of pipe (PVC, ductile iron, RCP, HDPE, and similar materials) in trenches according to blueprints, grade stakes, and laser/grade instruments.
  • —Prepare trench bedding and backfill in accordance with project specifications and safety standards.
  • —Connect, seal, and join pipe sections using appropriate couplings, gaskets, or fittings.
  • —Guide equipment operators (excavators, backhoes) during pipe placement and trench work using hand signals and clear communication.
  • —Install manholes, catch basins, valves, and other appurtenances as required.
  • —Check pipe grade and alignment using laser levels, string lines, or other survey equipment.
  • —Identify and mark utility conflicts; work safely around existing underground utilities.
  • —Perform trench safety procedures, including shoring, sloping, or shielding in compliance with OSHA excavation standards.
  • —Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site; properly store and handle materials and equipment.
  • —Perform general laborer duties as needed, including shoveling, tamping, and material handling.
  • —Communicate effectively with the crew foreman and other trades regarding progress and site conditions.

Qualifications

Required

  • —Prior experience laying pipe on a construction site (utility, municipal, or heavy civil construction preferred).
  • —Working knowledge of trench safety practices and OSHA excavation requirements.
  • —Ability to read basic construction plans, grade stakes, and utility markings.
  • —Comfortable working in and around open trenches and heavy equipment.
  • —Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and varying site environments.
  • —Reliable transportation to job sites in the Greater Cleveland area.
  • —Valid driver's license.

Preferred

  • —Experience with laser levels and grade-checking equipment.
  • —2+ years of pipelaying or underground utility experience.

Certifications (Current or Willing to Obtain)

  • —OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction.
  • —CDL (Class A or B).
  • —Confined space entry training.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • —Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 75–100 lbs occasionally with assistance.
  • —Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined trench spaces for extended periods.
  • —Ability to climb in and out of trenches and excavations safely.
  • —Ability to work in outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, and precipitation.

What We're Looking For

  • —Someone who takes pride in exact grade, alignment, and connection work.
  • —Comfortable working around heavy equipment and in open trenches.
  • —A team player who communicates clearly with the crew foreman and other trades.

Compensation & Benefits

  • —Union scale wages per the applicable CBA.
  • —Full fringe package: health and welfare, pension, annuity, and training funds.
  • —Overtime, travel pay and per diem on out-of-town assignments.
  • —Opportunities for training, certification, and advancement within the company.
